ABOUT HECTOR

20180924_092022.jpg

I love everything about what I do, but most of all I love building bridges between people and communities--new languages do this. Together, through learning, we participate in making America a more multicultural and open-minded society, by sharing ideas and knowledge across diverse backgrounds.

Back in Colombia, from the late 80s to the early 2000s, I worked for 15 years as a reporter for radio stations and newspapers, covering stories related to criminal and political violence. I also taught journalism and writing at several colleges, and worked as director of communications and public relations for several mayors’ offices and NGOs. Those were hard times: there were no easy facts.

I came to the United States in 2004, and began teaching Spanish in 2005 at a small language academy. In 2008, I joined Instituto Cervantes of Chicago. At this school I have taught all levels of Spanish, and have taught several special courses as well, including Spanish-English Comparative Grammar, Magical Realism and Daily Life in Latin America, The Nobel Prizes of Literature in Spanish, Literature in Movies, Painting and Society in Latin America during the Twentieth Century, and Latin American Current Politics. From 2010 through 2013, I taught Spanish levels one through four at Loyola University of Chicago. Using language correctly has been very important to me, in both my daily life and my work. Because of that, I can help you speak well and properly.

In my classes, I teach topically: traveling, literature, fine arts, music and architecture, as well as history, politics and social justice are all areas of focus. My classroom environment is friendly, serious, and respectful of differences. Are you interested in joining the millions of people who speak Spanish all over the world? I would love to hear from you. I stand ready to discuss this exciting possibility with you. Join us!

I had a pleasure of taking Hector’s class last year. It was absolutely the best experience I’ve had so far in learning Spanish. I appreciated his personality, patience, cheerful and enthusiastic approach, and a very successful methodology. I literally saw my Spanish language skills grow every week. The added bonus was the depth of his knowledge and intellect, which made the classes not only informational, but also very interesting and entertaining. I hope that I will have another opportunity to study Spanish with Hector and I will be happy to recommend him to any potential students.

If you gather a group of friends and we can find a good place and arrange a convenient schedule to study, of course I’ll give the classes.

Yes, I offer online classes as well, considering that traveling is not very easy for some people.  I understand that this is the most efficient and realistic option for many of you.
